Statement from the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) on the Inclusion of the American Music Tourism Act in the Continuing Resolution

Washington, D.C. (Dec. 18, 2024) The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) applauds the inclusion of the American Music Tourism Act of 2024 in the Continuing Resolution. It is important legislation recognizing the immense contributions of music tourism and independent stages to our nation’s economy. This Act provides a framework for the U.S. Department of Commerce to identify and promote the venues, festivals, performing arts centers, and promoters that make the United States a global destination for music enthusiasts. The strategy the U.S. will develop because of this legislation will aim to drive more domestic and foreign visitors to music tourism destinations, including independent venues and festivals.

“Independent venues and festivals are the lifeblood of local communities, not just as cultural hubs but also as powerful engines of economic activity. They attract millions of tourists annually, fueling spending at local hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments, while creating jobs and opportunities in every community across America,” said Stephen Parker, NIVA Executive Director. “By commissioning the first national strategy and focus on music tourism, this legislation ensures that these spaces continue to thrive, offering diverse programming and unforgettable experiences to audiences from all over the world.”

NIVA commends the inclusion of initiatives to promote rural and culturally rich destinations and to emphasize the unique role of music in the American travel experience. This approach will amplify the voices of independent operators of all sizes and promote the vitality of under-promoted communities.

NIVA stands ready to partner with the U.S. Department of Commerce to bring the goals of this Act to life.
